Mistake number one: buying smart bulbs for overhead fixtures.

Look, smart bulbs are great for lamps. Table lamps, floor lamps, places where you want color changing or you’re renting and can’t replace switches.

But if you put a fifty-dollar smart bulb in an overhead fixture, what happens when it burns out? You’re buying another fifty-dollar bulb.

Smart switch controls that same fixture. Switch lasts ten years minimum. You can use five-dollar LED bulbs from Costco.

Mistake number two: mixing too many ecosystems.

I walked into a house last month where the client had Hue bulbs, TP-Link switches, Ring cameras, and an amazon echo controlling everything. Four different apps. Nothing talked to anything else properly.

Modern smart switches need a neutral wire. Most houses built after 1980 have them. But not all.

Before you buy anything, pop off one switch plate and look inside. You should see a bundle of white wires connected together. That’s your neutral.

Don’t try to install a regular smart switch without a neutral. Best case, it won’t work. Worst case, you’ll damage the switch.

Then decide if you want to expand.

If you like it, buy the Lutron hub and add more switches. The hub lets you integrate with other systems — Alexa, Google, HomeKit, whatever you prefer.

For people who want color changing lights, start with one Hue bulb in a table lamp. See if you actually use the color features. Most people set them to warm white and leave them there.

And here’s my contrarian take. Don’t automate everything right away.

I know, I know. The whole point of smart homes is automation. But automation that doesn’t match your habits is just annoying.

Live with manual smart switches for a month. Notice your patterns. Do you always turn off the living room light when you head to bed? Do you like different brightness levels for different times of day?

Then automate based on what you actually do. Not what you think you should do.

The goal isn’t to have the most automated house on the block. It’s to have lighting that makes your life easier.

Start simple. Build slowly. And don’t let anyone sell you a whole-house system until you understand what you actually want.
